Beer Geek: Awesome Ale Brewed and IPA Beers I Drank This Weekend Review.

$

Hey Nubians,

I've only been in love with a beer bottle and a mirror.
-Sid Vicious

This weekend I purchased a bunch of cool, interesting beers. I've always enjoyed going to beer tastings but I never really blogged about it. But as I've evolved through the years, so must my blog. I'm having a lot more fun with things like this. *I'm over 21 years old and please always drink responsibly*

I've been drinking beer for a long time. You can say I've had a long history with this alcoholic beverage. My dad is Dominican and boy oh boy do they enjoy a nice cold brew. Particularly an ice cold Presidente Pilsner Beer. When I was younger my dad would let me taste his beer all the time by taking a baby sip. I guess you could say it's in my blood ha ha. As I got older, I met my best friend and she's Irish and also obsessed with beer! Follow her instagram @TheBeerBunny where she rates beers. It's hard for me to not love tasting specialty beers or craft beers when the people I love, love them too.

I went to my local Smiths Supermarket over the weekend and picked up these bad boys. Read below to see what I thought and what I rate them.

First Up...

Elysian Space Dust IPA
Style: Imperial IPA
Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.20%

It's funny, this is the first one I tried and I think it ended up being my favorite of the bunch probably due to personal preference. The Elysian Space Dust IPA pours clear light gold and taste sort of rich and bittersweet. You can taste citrus, pine, and a nice hint of malt. Honestly I picked it up mainly because I wanted to try something new and the packaging caught my eye. I was pleasantly surprised and it was freaken delicious!

Rating 4.5/5

Squatters Hop Rising Double India Pale Ale
Style: Imperial IPA
Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9%

I almost felt like I can smell the hops more in this beer than I could taste them but I still enjoyed it overall. It did have a stronger alcohol taste to it which probably explains the 'Double IPA' title. It was very drinkable and the type of 6 pack I would pick up to hang with friends on a chill night. Nice citrus taste that didn't feel too overwhelming.

Rating 4.2/5

Kona Brewing Koko Brown
Style: American Brown Ale
Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

This beer had a very distinctive flavor. It has toasted coconut blended into each brew. I liked it but I would only pick up a 6 pack of this if I was going to be with people I knew loved beer and a nice brown ale. It could be a bit overwhelming for people that aren't used to exploring different tasting beer. I almost felt like I could taste some chocolate & caramel in there. It made my taste buds dance for sure and I would drink it again.

Rating 3.9/5

Wild Blue Premium Blueberry Lager
Style: Fruit/Vegetable Beer
Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

I must say, this may have been my first time buying a Fruit/Vegetable Beer in my own home and I think it's an acquired taste that's not for me. The Blueberry is VERY present to the point where I felt like I was almost drinking juice and it tasted too sweet for me like blueberry syrup. If you like sweet drinks, you will enjoy this for sure. It is definitely what I would consider to be the lighter side of beer. You may enjoy it for Spring/Summer. Pours out a redish color.

Rating 2.5/5

Last but not least...

Squatters Bumper Crop Honey Ale

Style: Herbed/Spiced Beer
Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

I picked this beer up because the bottle says "Ale Brewed with Honey and Lavender" and that sounded immensely relaxing to me. Like the Spa Day of beers or something ha ha. It was pretty tasty and I did like it very much. The bottle has this attractive kind of cool vintage look to it. I really did taste the lavender and other floral flavors. It was light and crisp. It tasted a tiny bit sweet but not in an overwhelming way like the Blueberry Lager did to me. It's a unique beer and definitely worth a try.

Rating 4.2/5

I enjoyed sharing my 2 cents on these beers with you and hope you'll be encouraged to taste one of them. Maybe next time I'll do a taste video with my drink! Could be fun. We'll see how it goes.

It's the perfect time to explore new drinks with Spring/Summer upon us. I'm sure you'll enjoy a gorgeous outdoor bar or two.

Cheers!

Monday Motivation: Sexy, Retro Film Posters.

Hey Nubians,

I Love A Classic Film Poster.

I was having a chat with my brother the other day and I asked him "Dear brother, why don't they make film posters the way they used to?"  A lot of movie posters from the 1960s through the 1980s are pure art! He answered that he wasn't sure but that for some reason a lot of other countries make more artistic posters. After seeing a few examples, I must say I agree. Even seeing the titles in other languages sometimes make them more attractive to me. The phrases that were used back in the 80s were also wittier in my personal opinion and the fonts were cooler too.

The women in the posters had this gorgeous, retro look to them and their hair and outfits where usually on point. They either had a tragic beauty to them or looked stunningly confident or strong. Another thing I noticed is the beautiful color stories in the posters which always makes me connect them to art.

From movies like Barbarella, Halloween, Deadly Blessing, and some I've never head of, here are a few that stood out to me.

I'll be randomly featuring posters like these more often because I find them inspiring and visually pleasing.

Cheers!

American Gods Comicbook Review And Starz Trailer Thoughts.

Hey Nubians,

New Reading Material...

I went to my local comicbook store Alternate Reality Comics the other day and asked the owner to recommend some good comicbooks. He's pretty cool so of course he was delighted to do so. One of the comicbooks he pointed out was American Gods published by Dark Horse comics based on the Award Winning Novel written by Neil Gaiman. I've heard of Neil Gaiman before because of his novel Coraline which later became a 3D stop motion film but I haven't read or heard much about American Gods. The comicbook was written by Neil Gaiman and P. Craig Russell with art by Scott Hampton.

The novel as well as the comic book revolve around Shadow Moon who was in prison and got released a bit early due to a tragedy in his life. On his way home, he bumps into a guy who changes his life. The story is mythical and well... has to do with Gods.

Watch me talk about the comicbook and the story in the first issue which doesn't real much yet but I know a little bit more because of the trailer. Also hear my first impressions on the Starz trailer.

American Gods is also about to become a show on STARZ developed by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green. I saw the trailer and it looks super interesting. The first eight episodes are set to premiere on April 30, 2017. Watch it below.

I highly recommend you pick up the comicbook and check out the show too. I'm excited to watch! The second issue of the comicbook drops April 12th so keep an eye out for it.

Cheers!

OMGosh! Pretty Ombre Nails With Sally Hansen.

Hey Nubians,

Do you love DIY nails? I know I do! I also enjoy fun, fashionable trends.

Take a look at this super cute manicure trend you can successfully do in your own home, the Manicure Ombre Trend! Sally Hansen Global Color Ambassador Madeline Poole takes the latest fashion trends from the runway, to your nails. This month, her recommendation is Ombre. Perfect for the Spring/Summer Season because it's so much fun to play with bright and bold colors. Lately I haven't been doing my nails because I've been painting and creating cool art but I think I'll have to try out the Ombre trend ASAP!

Nails Inspired By Hair And Fashion

Madeline developed this vibrant nail look for Monse's spring/summer 2017 NYFW show. Her inspiration for the look were the bold colors from this season's catwalks, and the ombre-dyed hairstyles of the stylish women on New York City's sidewalks.

Want to get the look yourself? Here's How - Madeline's Ombre mani is simple to achieve at home with no special tools required, just a regular makeup sponge. Featuring Auran't You Relaxed, Teal Good and Robes and Rosé, this take on Ombre is the perfect pop of color for any summer outfit.

Step 1: Apply Sally Hansen Color Therapy Nail & Cuticle Oil and massage onto cuticle area. Remove thoroughly from nail plate with alcohol or nail polish remover before painting.

Step 2:  Apply 2 coats of Sally Hansen Color Therapy in Auran't You Relaxed.
Step 3:  Use a makeup sponge cut in half to lightly apply Sally Hansen Color Therapy in Robes and Rosé. Concentrate the color towards the middle of the nail and blend upward towards the free edge.
Step 4: To create a smoother blend, pour out a small puddle of Sally Hansen Color Therapy in Auran't You Relaxed and apply a mixture of bright pink and darker pink to the center of the nail where the two colors meet. This will allow for a smoother blend.
Step 5:  Repeat this step with the teal color – Sally Hansen Color Therapy in Teal Good. Continue blending colors until you're satisfied with the transition.
Step 6: After allowing the nails to dry 5 minutes apply Sally Hansen Color Therapy Top Coat to further blend and seal colors together.

Have fun! Cheers!

3 Reasons To Love Modelo's All New Single-Serve Chelada Tamarindo Picante.

Hey Nubians,

Have You Ever Tried A Chelada?

I've always heard of the Cheleda drink but I only took about 2 sips out of one before. I've drank Bloody Mary's which are a similar drink, but the Chelada uses beer instead of Vodka. I think some of you might really enjoy that! I personally enjoy a nice, cold beer a lot more than Vodka. Casa Modelo has released it's new drink the Modelo Cheleda Tamarindo Picante for Spring/Summer and it's pretty tasty. Modelo Chelada Tamarindo Picante celebrates traditional Mexican ingredients: Chipotle Peppers and Tamarind - to offer fans of Modelo a spicy yet sweet taste which is a combination everyone enjoys. It's definitely a distinct taste worth giving a shot. Also people swear by them to cure hangovers!

A Chelada is a Mexican alcohol cocktail made with beer, lime juice, and assorted sauces, spices, and peppers. It is served in a chilled glass with Tajin or Salt on the rimm of the glass. Those are the basic ingredients which some people customize. I love that the Modelo Chelada Tamarindo Picante saves me time by selling the drink in a ready to serve can.

“We’re thrilled to introduce Modelo Chelada Tamarindo Picante into the Casa Modelo family,” said Ann Legan, vice president of marketing for Casa Modelo at Constellation Brands. “The sweet flavor of tamarind, combined with the spice of chipotle peppers, delivers a well-balanced taste that honors Modelo’s Mexican roots and provides consumers with a truly unique flavor profile unlike any other chelada beverage offering currently available.”

Modelo Chelada Tamarindo Picante is produced with an ABV of 3.3%, and is now available at convenience stores nationwide for a suggested price of $2.99 for a 24 oz. can.

Watch this video of George and I trying the Modelo Chelada Tamarindo Picante for the first time and see what we think. It was a lot of fun making this video together and we both enjoyed the drink.

Here are 3 reasons to love the Modelo Cheleda Tamarindo Picante.

1) It's Ready To Serve. No hassling in the kitchen or making a mess. Just purchase a few cans and enjoy with your friends.
2) It helps cure hangovers! People swear by Chelada's as a hangover remedy which is why it's a popular drink to have during the day.
3) It's Sweet, Spicy and Refreshing! Perfect for Spring/Summer.

If you want to try something new pick one up at a store near you. Remember to drink responsibly!

Hey Nubians,

Life Is Short. Make Each Hair Flip Fabulous.

I love changing up my hair color. I feel like I've had almost every single crazy fashion color painted on my hair at some point. I'm surprised I have any hair left! My latest look done by my Amazing Aveda Artist Maria at g Aveda Salon & Spa Las Vegas is a little bit on the galaxy/nebula color side or maybe even a tiny bit mermaid inspired or The Northern Lights... Three things I LOVE! You'll see hints of lavender, silver, and green intertwined creating a beautiful color palette.

I was really into the half black, half silver look I had just previously sported, but my hair grows very rapidly and it's hard to keep up with maintenance sometimes. Maria suggested we bring down the root on the other side so it doesn't look messy when it grows out. Did I mention it feels incredibly healthy too? I personally love it! She did a great job. If you're in Las Vegas, go visit here! Below enjoy some inspiration images. Cheers!

Hey Nubians,

Take a look at this super fun fashion editorial of model Nadia Araujo photographed by Arved Colvin-Smith for Hunger Magazine. I like the vibe this editorial has going on: Bold, Vibrant, Beautiful, Fun. I wear bright colors year round, but I like that during Spring and Summer I see more of it in the streets. It literally light up the streets! I get very inspired by that. I believe every person has an inner fashionista waiting to break out.

I like the mixed patterns and loose silhouettes theme in this editorial. The textures are off the wall! That's something I don't play around with so much and should, mixing textures. Nadia Araujo is also sporting the bold eyeliner beauty trend that has been floating around. It looks so pretty!

I enjoy seeing the movements Nadia Araujo is making while wearing the clothing, it's almost like she's the young, wild and free dancer. It also shows off the volume and details of the garments while they're flying in the air.

The Cutest Animal Plates At West Elm!

Hey Nubians,

Do You Love Unique Kitchen Decor?

Have you ever heard of West Elm? I work across the street from one a few days a week at the Downtown Summerlin Mall in Las Vegas and I'm always window shopping as I pass by. They have very beautiful furniture and items for your home. West Elm launched in Brooklyn in 2002, funny because I'm from New York but found them in Vegas... their store focuses on modern home decor and modern furniture. I've always been smitten with their animal plate designs. Often, I dream of having the perfect kitchen... By that I mean very customized to my taste. Unfortunately, I've been moving around the last few years and haven't felt like I've found a permanent home yet. I fear I'll break a lot of things when I move. But I can still crush on things right?!

By designing over 90% of their products in–house, West Elm's design team has increased the selection of organic, handcrafted, sustainably sourced and Fair Trade Certified™ products. I checked the commitment section on their website and was impressed. I have a lot of respect for companies that try to focus on sustainable products as it better our environment and the world in general.

You go Jim Brett! But back to the adorable plates...

These are their 'Dapper Animal Salad Plates' which are based on paintings of real animals. Designer Rachel Kozlowski dressed and accessorized these beautiful animals to give the characters a personality of their own. She describes her designs as "Fun, Clever & Lighthearted". I am obsessed with them! Most of these plates retail at $10 which I think is so good and you can find some on sale here and there. If you don't want to buy them all at once you can slowly collect them which I think is cool. There's something so adverse and compelling about these that I love. They're visual happiness. Wouldn't it be find of cool (or scary) to live in a world where animals dressed like this?

This Fox plate is currently on sale online for $5.99 HERE. It kind of reminds me of Mrs. Fox from Wes Anderson's film Fantastic Mr. Fox which I cosplayed at New York Comic Con.

Hey Nubians,

"And remember, no matter where you go, there you are." -Confucius

Do you love crystals and believe in their healing powers?

As kids, we tend to play around with rocks.. I know I did. Something about them makes you focus more and grabs your attention. I liked rocks that are different colors, displayed unique patterns, and enjoyed collecting different sizes. As an adult, it's kind of funny that many of us gravitate to crystals for similar reasons. They're the adult version of rocks! Mesmerizing and entertaining. I like having crystals and wearing them as jewelry so I feel a closer connection with them. It's also nice to have some on your desk while you work.

Many people believe in crystal healing powers and use them as an alternative medicine practice that provides a wide variety of healing and therapeutic properties.

A lot of my friends are into crystals and chakra jewelry. I'm not sure how much I believe in their healing properties yet but I do know that I enjoy starring at them and it makes me feel happy when I wear them... they often bring me a sense of peace, comfort and uplift my mood with their groovy patterns and sometimes iridescent colors. It's insane to think about how they are formed.

I shop for them as if I were shopping for medicine. I try to purchase them based on how I'm feeling at the moment or if I'm facing a certain issue, something that I think would help according to their healing properties. I also like that people believe once you've lost the crystal or misplaced it, it's because it's already healed you in some way... I know for some individuals it's a stretch to think this is true but others find it gives a sense of closure... It's all about what you believe in. Someone once told me, life is a lot more gratifying when you believe in something... Do you agree?

One of my friends at work introduced me to the Etsy shop KEEPINITZEN and I love their variety, designs, price point and how descriptive they are about everything. They sell Chakra Stones, Crystal Jewelry, Incense & More. Shipping is fast too! Here are 2 items I purchased recently.

Homage To Edie Sedgwick: Stella Maxwell For Vogue Brazil May 2017.

(The real Edie Sedgwick above)

Hey Nubians,

It's not that I'm rebelling. It's that I'm just trying to find another way. -Edie Sedgwick

Remember Edie Sedgwick? She was a socialite, model, actress and a muse to many during the 1960's. Some people know her best for the work she did with infamous artist Andy Warhol. She seemed very free-spirited and like she had a little rebel within. She's been a fashion muse to many people I know over the years. I always liked the photos she modeled in which is one of the reasons I love Stella Maxwell channeling her for Vogue Brazil. It's a stunning editorial that makes my mind travel back to a different era I could have only imagined living in. Probably wish I lived in really... glamorous, yet simpler times when art and fashion meant something different. If I had a time machine, without a shadow of a doubt I would live in the 60's.

Enjoy this fun editorial of Stella Maxwell for Vogue Brazil photographed by Giampaolo Sgura. Stylist Pedro Sales did a great job styling the 60's inspired looks using designers pieces from Marc Jacobs, Rodarte, Elie Saab, Saint Laurent, Tommy Hilfiger & more.  I loved the makeup done by Fulvia Farolfi, particularly the bold eyes which also remind me of another iconic model from the 60's Twiggy. The hair was on point as well which was done by Franco Gobbi.

Nickelodeon Fashion at Spencer's

Hey Nubians,

Can It Be That It Was All So Simple Then...

Life is so hectic these days with what feels like a tsunami of technology and social media trying to drag me away into the abyss. I'm sure many of you can relate. I often think back to my childhood and simpler times. Some of those simpler times include Nickelodeon cartoons! Thinking back, I believe I've always loved style, fashion, and beauty as well... my mom is Colombian (duh). Anyway, gosh I loved watching The Rugrats, Rocko's Modern Life, Doug, Ren & Stimpy, Hey Arnold, just to name a few.

I was so excited and maybe a little emotional to see that Spencer's is carrying a line of Nickelodeon Fashion merchandise. Talk about a #throwback. I'm coveting a few pieces for sure. The collection includes a variety of men's and women's tees, backpacks, socks, posters, & more. The graphic tees are so much fun and I've always appreciated a good backpack. I think I might even want to get my hands on some of the men's shirts to wear myself because I love the prints.

To me, style has always been about wearing things that not only look good but essentially make me happy. It's a form a therapy and these pieces make me smile! I consider that both healthy and satisfying which means it's worth my money, am I right?! Below see a few of my favorites. For more check out Spencer's HERE

3 Ways Geek & Pop Culture Have Influenced My Fashion and Overall Style.

$
0
0

Hey Nubians,

"It's not about brand, it's about style"

When I was a young little girl, I used to wake up on Saturday mornings with my brothers to watch the X-Men animated series cartoons. Later, I'd get into the Batman and Spiderman animated series as well. This was my introduction to comicbooks too. I would also play video games: Mario 64, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Nights, just to name a few. When I became about 15 years old, I started getting very interested in fashion & style and started separating myself from the crowd and trends to create my own vision through things that inspired me. That was the beginning of a long style, beauty & geek journey that is still evolving till this day.

Here are a few ways Comicbooks, Art, and Pop Culture have transformed my style...

1) Confidence

I have always told my friends that there's a big difference between fashion and style. I think style is made up of attitude & courage. I grew up watching Super Heroes / Heroines and Villains on television and this helped me develop a certain kind of confident attitude. As a young girl, I gravitated towards female characters first and seeing strong females such as Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Jean Grey, or someone like Princess Mononoke from an anime film made me feel like I could overcome so much. Whether it was Jean Grey dealing with her Phoenix Saga, or Batgirl having to lie to her father the Commissioner all the time, these ladies were always overcoming hurdles and I found it so inspiring. Confidence in style is probably going to be your strongest allie... even if you feel a little crazy you must own what you do.

2) Color

Boom! Pow! Wham! Bang! I am such an enormous fan of color and making a statement. When I wear black too often I feel like my soul starts turning off. I love fashionable colors and textures and things that POP in general. It's fun and different and allows your imagination to run wild. I always admired Roy Lichtenstein artwork and how cool yet tragic some of the pieces were. I always had so much color around me within art and comicbooks. It stuck with me throughout life for sure. Color therapy is real and it will brighten up your day. Betty & Veronica from Archie Comics had such unique, cool and colorful style and probably the most relatable to everyday wear. I would enjoy their looks just as much as the stories.

3) Conventions
I started going to New York Comic Con at the Javitz Center around 2004 or 2005 maybe? Reed Pop didn't run the convention yet, I'm not sure who did. But Ever since I started going I never stopped. The cosplayers inspired me so much because they were building amazing costumes from scratch just like fashion designers make clothing. Some of the costumes I saw must have included so much imagination and creative technique. I remember witnessing so much Lolita and Harajuku style and being blown away by this Steam Punk panel I went to around 2006. It was sooooo inspiring and made me want to step my game up in both cosplaying and fashion. If you think you can't get inspired by a Comic Con convention you're terribly mistaken. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. You'll thank me later for the cultural explosion you'll witness.

These are just the 3 top reasons I can think of off the top of my head. In reality there are endless amounts of ways geek and pop culture have influenced my style and I'm so happy about it. Always pay attention to the things around you. Slow down and really look. They might influence you more than you think and change your life in all sorts of magical ways.

Cheers!

Hey Nubians,

Who saw the latest episode of CW's The Flash?!

Wasn't it absolutely AMAZING? I don't want to give any spoilers away but my goodness, I was tearing up during certain scenes. I can't wait till next Tuesday! On another note, You know who always looks gorgeous and beautiful in an absolutely sinister way? Killer Frost AKA Caitlin Snow played by Danielle Panabaker. Her makeup always looks flawless even after one of her crazy battles with Barry or Cisco.

I noticed this week on instagram, The Flash makeup artist Kari Anderson shared the products she used to keep this frosty villain looking badass and chilly. I'm a big fan of some of the brands she used such as Urban Decay, Kat Von D Makeup, MAC Cosmetics, NARS & more. See the instructions on her post.

I thought it was a great post to share because whether we're cosplaying for a Comic Con or sometimes dressing up for Halloween, we could easily get stuck on finding a good color and making sure it's good quality. These all seem like quality products and I have experience with many of these brands.

The lips use a variety of products. Have fun making it work.

I hope we get some closure on The Flash next week. Maybe there's hope for Caitlin Snow yet...

Cheers!

Stella Takes Time For Sports. Vogue Japan June 2017

Hello Nubians,

The Joy of Dressing is an Art - John Galliano

I love sharing editorials from Vogue Japan. They're always so colorful, bold and animated. Fashion Editor and Stylist Anna Dello Russo has been killing it! Also, one of my favorite models as of late to follow is Stella Maxwell. This lady just can't take a bad photo and has so much natural flair and grace. She looks gorgeous in everything. Remember the homage she did for Edie Sedgwick for Vogue Brazil in May? Swoooon! A model has to change the way she looks, acts, and poses for almost every editorial for reasons such as the personality of the brand/clothing or the change of scenery. In this sense, it's almost like the beginning stages of being an actress I'd suppose. That's how I look at it at least and Stella does it magnificently.

This editorial was shot by talented photographer Giampaolo Sgura, styled by Anna Dello Russo, hair by Andrew Guida & makeup by Andrew Guida.

On another note, I remember when I first started blogging, I would do interviews for websites and magazines once in a blue and the #1 question I would get asked is "How would you describe your style?".  It was always very difficult for me to answer this because I was in my early 20s and I was constantly changing. I also never stuck to an era or specific look like some people tend to do. I would do it all, high heels and glam or the next day I could be sporty spice. I would often answer "Chameleon" because of my ability to change with ease. Identifying your style is difficult. It will keep evolving your whole life, especially if you work in a creative field and get influenced by culture around you. If I had to answer this today however, I would say athleisure with a twist. Pretty much exactly what you see in this editorial. I get inspired by color therapy and cartoons. I'm quite animated. That is the type of fashion/style I want to live in. Though it's laid back, if you do it right it's glamorous in it's own right, especially for a New York City born and raised girl like me.

If I had to give anyone tips on developing their own unique style I would say: Ditch the rules and trust your instincts. Most importantly be fearless, because the fearless individuals are the leaders & taste-makers of the world.

Dying over these sneakers... the book bag... the coat...everything.

Be free.

Hope these super fun editorial inspired you to go out and buy something maybe you wouldn't sometime soon.

Cheers!

Hey Nubians,

Are you a fashion lover and geek girl? You must read this Hunter Haute Comic Book Created by Kosi Harris!

I have the pleasure of personally knowing Kosi Harris and I must say she's quite the She-ro. We met through mutual friends online and have had the satisfaction of bonding over our love of fashion, comicbooks, beauty, cosplay, and more. Kosi also has a blog you should check out called One Creates Oneself. This Brooklyn girl is a smart cookie too! She's an account director at the public relations firm she works at and she recently acquired a Masters Degree at the Southern New Hampshire University. BOOM!

I remember when I first met Kosi a few years ago she talked about putting together a fashion comicbook and told me she had it all mapped out in her head. I was intrigued by the idea. It was only a matter of time. Watching Hunter Haute come to life and be so damn good makes me immensely proud of her. It's one of her many accomplishments and I have a feeling this is just the tip of the Iceberg for her creative pursuits.

This comicbook co-written by Phil Buck and Illustrated by Candace April Lee, has a solid storyline involving history, love, loss, determination, and the start of a new journey for Hunter Haute.

About Hunter Haute

"Amina Williams has just returned home from Brazil after taking a gap year from her studies at The Design Institute. Her mother, Alexia Williams, was a fashion industry mogul and the CEO of her own company, Williams Industries. There was much controversy surrounding the “accident” that killed Amina’s mother. After a year away, Amina must come home to deal with the fallout in her personal life and the within the business dealings of her mother’s empire."

Make sure you stop by Webtoons to read Hunter Haute HERE

I had the pleasure of interviewing Kosi about Hunter Haute. I hope you enjoy and definitely read the comicbook. I promise it'll leave you craving issue #2!

N: I know you’re a publicist, a blogger, you just received your Master Degree and now a comic book writer. I think I even saw a video recently of you killing it at the gym. With that being said, you juggle a lot and you do it well. What’s your advice for keeping your own Super Heroine alive? Creative people have a hard time focusing and can easily be pulled in many directions. What keeps you so focused and determined? Tell us your secret!!!

K: Ha ha I don’t know if I have a secret.. coffee helps a lot. Getting a good night’s sleep. Creating realistic goals, a friend taught me this last year. For example, stating “get website done” on a to do list is vague. My friend mentioned writing a task like that that will NEVER get done. So I learned not to list things like that and write a task more realistic with my time.

Being around my family and friends inspire me, helps keep me focused and determined. In addition, understanding that projects can be moved around/be delayed and it’s not the end of the world. You have to take time to rest and have fun, it only adds to the productivity!

N: What was your main inspiration for Hunter Haute and how does this character relate to your life?

K: I started doing drafts for Hunter Haute before I had my BLOG, I think at the time I was looking for a creative outlet where I wouldn’t feel judged for my ideas. It’s a liberating feeling when you just sit down and write, whether it’s fiction, non-fiction it allows your brain to get everything you want to say out on paper.

N: Sometimes when we have a great idea we have a hard time finding the right people to partner with us. Did you have a hard time finding writer Phil Buck and illustrator Candace April Lee? Any advice you can give to creatives on finding the right people to work with based off this experience?

K: I had a harder time finding an illustrator than a writer. I think Phil and I having a love for comics and new ideas we just cliqued. Finding Candance was tough. Before finding her on Behance, I was looking at a few schools. And kind of like Goldilocks there were illustrators that had too much of this and less of that. Candance was just right :)

N: Which was your first love, Fashion or Comicbooks? Give us details!

K: Fashion, I have my older sisters to thank for that. They worked in the retail industry, are image consultants. I used to play with my sister’s clothes all the time! I remember one of them had an old school 90s belt nameplate, I always joked when I “grow up” I would get one with my name on it. Ironically I am grown and that is making a comeback so I probably should get it.

N: It’s so interesting to see Capoeira as the main source of Amina’s fighting skills, Have you taken a Capoeira class in the past? What inspired this decision?

K: I have done it once, I thought it was a fighting style not seen in comic books or even in TV/Movies. Writers go straight to Karate, which is great but I thought it would be an interesting take as Amina is an avid traveler and a New Yorker.

N: I really enjoyed the illustrations by Candace April Lee. They were very vivid, action packed and made me feel like the book was almost actually moving haha it made the characters come to life in my imagination. I also noticed the detail in the clothing, did you guys pick out the outfits for the illustrations together or did you design them yourself?

K: It was collaborative to where I would have excel sheets highlighting each character’s style (yep it was super helpful for Candace) and different scenarios they would be in and the type of looks I would see them in. The outfits were a mix of inspiration of street style, trends, and personal experience being a New Yorker.

N:  I noticed on one of the pages, Amina was looking at an old framed photo of herself with her mother and she had a superhero mask on. Would you say it was Halloween or was she going to Comic Con?

K: Halloween, where she would spend quality time with her mother and they would go to the Halloween Parade and be inspired by the costumes.

N: Speaking of Comic Con, I know you’re an avid cosplayer and we have bumped into each other at Comic Cons in the past. What has your favorite cosplay costume been?

K: My favorite Cosplay has been Catwoman from The Dark Knight Rises, it was the first cosplay I really took seriously prepping about 6 weeks in advance for it. I was able to work with a rad seamstress that I was in constant communication with from start to finish. LOL I loved it so much I danced to the costume with my diploma two weeks ago!

N: You’re going to hate me for this one… Dc or Marvel?

K: Yes I do Nubia! Growing up, I was exposed to the DC world first through the cartoons. All the cartoons shows I've watched include Batman: The Animated Series/Adventures, Superman: The Animated Series, Static Shock, and Batman: Beyond

It's no secret that mythology, especially Greek mythology has influenced the characters and stories in the DC Universe. Superman can be equated to the sun god Apollo, Batman to Hades, Wonder Woman to Athena, and Aquaman to Poseidon.

Over the years, writers have added more facets to these god-like characters and made it to where they want to retain their humanity, having acknowledged their mythic nature, that's very interesting to me.

From Marvel, I grew up watching the cartoons Spider-Man: Animated series, The Fantastic Four, and the original X-Men cartoon.

The first graphic novel I read from Marvel was The Dark Phoenix Saga. What appeals to me and to a lot of other people about Marvel are that the characters are flawed.

Many, if not all of these characters can be traced to characters from literature and even real-life people. Hulk is Jekyll and Hyde, Loki to Edmund from King Lear, Tony Stark to Howard Hughes , and Charles Xavier to Martin Luther King Jr.

What appeals to me the most is that my favorite group of superheroes in Marvel: the X-Men have gone through the ringer in their 50 some odd year history. Facing discrimination because they're genetically different is very appealing to me as a person of color.

Despite my cosplays being DC based, with Wonder Woman and Catwoman, I would have to go with Marvel. I think in today’s world with social media making it seem as if everyone is perfect, it is important for writers to write characters that are flawed that folks can relate to. There is already so much showing us to be “perfect” there has to be a balance.

N: Spill! Can you tell us if you’re cosplaying as Amina AKA Hunter Haute this year?

K: OMG you are the 5th person to ask me that, now I don’t know! We’ll see!

N: If you could have one Super Power, What would it be?

K: Telekenesis. Telekenesis is a power with infinite possibilities. Actually, whenever I take a Superhero quiz I get Jean Grey. She is the queen of Telekenesis in the Marvel Universe. I think having the ability to control any element, influence any movement, and manipulate any physical action is far better than any other power. Imagine being able to cure cancer by destroying cancerous cells in a person’s body, or influencing an election…I’ll just leave that here :)

N: Ok you can give me short answers here. Think of these as hypothetical questions almost to get to know Amina’s personality a little more. (They may be one word answers)

N: One word to describe Amina’s style?
K: Girly but with a hint of Tomboy, she wears overalls with her Loubtutin heels and has multiple piercings.

N: Does Amina have a fashion blog?
K: No, but she hangs with bloggers.

N: Her favorite color?

K: Navy Blue.
N: Does she drink Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts?
K: Starbucks.

N: What’s her favorite designer at the moment?

K: Stella McCartney! With #45’s policies to damage the earth, Stella uses products that don’t harm the environment but preserve that. McCartney’s design’s are also a mix of girly and tomboy, like Amina.

N: What song is she blasting on her headphones right now?
K: HUMBLE by Kendrick Lamar.

N: Thanks so much Kosi you’ve been an absolute treat! Last but definitely not least, when can we expect issue 2?
K: Late Fall!

Till next time!

Cheers
